Partial Shaven DHI in Thailand: Do You Have to Shave, and What Does It Cost?

What "partial shaven" actually means

Almost everyone searching this has the same underlying worry: whether they will have to walk around with a shaved head for a month. The answer depends on which of three approaches your clinic uses, and they are genuinely different procedures rather than marketing labels.

• •Full shave — the entire scalp is clipped to roughly 1mm. Fastest for the surgeon, cheapest, and the highest achievable graft count in one session. You are visibly post-op for 2–4 weeks.
• •Partial shave (donor-only) — only a strip of the donor area at the back and sides is shaved. The hair above it is left long and falls over the shaved strip, so within a few days it is largely hidden. This is what most people mean by "partial shaven DHI".
• •Unshaven / U-DHI — nothing is shaved. Grafts are extracted from between existing long hairs, one at a time. Slowest, most technically demanding, most expensive, and the lowest practical graft ceiling.

What each option costs in Bangkok

Thai clinics price hair transplants per graft, so the shaving method changes the price by changing how long the surgeon and technicians spend per graft. As a baseline, a standard FUE hair transplant in Thailand runs $2,500–$5,500 for 2,000–4,500 grafts — roughly $1.00–$1.40 per graft.

DHI, which places each graft with a Choi implanter pen rather than into a pre-made incision, generally carries a premium over standard FUE because it is slower and needs a larger trained team. Shaving choice then layers on top.

• •Full-shave DHI — commonly around $1.30–$1.70 per graft in Bangkok.
• •Partial-shave DHI — typically a modest step up, often 10–20% over full shave, because only the donor extraction is affected.
• •Fully unshaven DHI — usually the largest premium, commonly 30–50% above full shave, and some clinics cap the session at 1,500–2,000 grafts because extraction is so much slower.
• •These are indicative market ranges, not quotes. Your binding price comes from the clinic after they assess your donor density and the area being treated.

The trade-off nobody explains up front

Unshaven work is not simply "the same result, more discreet". Extracting grafts from between long hairs is harder to do cleanly, so for a large session most surgeons will either decline it or split it across two visits. If you need 3,500+ grafts, insisting on fully unshaven may cost you more, take two trips, and still give a thinner result than a single shaved session.

Partial shave is the compromise that suits most people: the donor strip is hidden by the hair above it within days, the graft ceiling is barely affected, and the premium is small. If you have short hair on the sides already, though, it will be visible — worth being honest with yourself about before paying extra for it.

Questions that separate a good clinic from a cheap one

• •Who actually extracts and implants the grafts — the surgeon, or technicians? How many cases does the surgeon personally supervise per day?
• •What is the quoted graft count based on, and what happens if fewer grafts are viable on the day?
• •Is the price per graft or per session, and does it change if the count goes up mid-procedure?
• •For unshaven work: what is your maximum graft count in one session, and why?
• •What does the follow-up look like once I have flown home, and at what point can I judge the result? (Realistically 9–12 months.)

Planning the trip

A transplant needs 3–5 days on the ground: consultation and design on day one, the procedure itself (6–9 hours for a large case), a first wash and check the following day, then a final review before you fly. It is one of the easier procedures to combine with a normal holiday, since there is no general anaesthetic and no inpatient stay.

What it is not is a quick fix. Transplanted hair sheds within weeks, regrows from around month four, and the final result lands at 9–12 months. Any clinic showing you a "before and after" at eight weeks is showing you something that has not happened yet.
