Visas for Medical Treatment in Thailand: Entry Rules, Extensions, and Staying Longer Than Planned

Most visitors can have treatment in Thailand on a standard tourist entry — but recovery does not always fit inside 30 days. Here is how the medical visa works, and how to extend if your surgeon will not clear you to fly.

For most treatments, a tourist entry is enough

Citizens of many countries receive a visa exemption on arrival in Thailand, and for short procedures — a dental trip, LASIK, a health checkup — that is comfortably sufficient. Nobody needs a special visa to see a Thai doctor.

Immigration requirements change, and they change without much notice. Always confirm current rules with the Royal Thai Embassy or consulate for your nationality before booking flights. Treat any date or duration you read online, including here, as a starting point to verify rather than an authority.

When you need a medical visa

Thailand offers a Non-Immigrant "O" visa for medical treatment, generally granting a longer initial stay and designed for exactly this situation. It is worth applying for in advance if your treatment involves a long recovery — knee or hip replacement, spine surgery, bariatric surgery, or staged reconstructive work.

Applications are made at a Thai embassy or consulate before travel, and typically require a letter from the treating Thai hospital confirming the appointment and expected treatment duration. Any of the international hospitals will issue this — their international patient offices do it routinely; just ask early, because it takes a few days.

  • A confirmation letter from the Thai hospital naming the procedure and expected duration.
  • Proof of funds sufficient for treatment and stay.
  • Confirmed accommodation and return travel arrangements.
  • In some cases, medical records supporting the need for treatment.

Extending once you are already here

This is the situation that catches people out: recovery takes longer than expected, or the surgeon declines to clear you to fly. Extensions are applied for at an Immigration Bureau office, and a medical extension normally requires a letter from your treating hospital stating that you are unfit to travel and why.

Do this before your permitted stay expires, not after. Overstaying carries fines and, past certain thresholds, re-entry bans — a genuinely unpleasant complication to add to a post-surgical recovery. The hospital’s international patient coordinator has done this many times and will usually help you prepare the paperwork if you ask.

A companion travelling with you

If someone is coming to look after you, they enter under their own arrangements — usually a standard tourist entry. Their stay is not automatically linked to yours, so if you extend, they may need to extend separately under their own circumstances. Worth checking in advance rather than discovering it in an immigration queue.

よくあるご質問

Do I need a medical visa to have treatment in Thailand?+

Not usually. Many nationalities can have short treatments on a standard visa exemption. A Non-Immigrant "O" visa for medical treatment is worth applying for when recovery will be lengthy. Confirm current rules with a Thai embassy for your nationality.

Can I extend my stay if recovery takes longer?+

Yes. Extensions are applied for at an Immigration Bureau office and normally require a letter from your treating hospital stating you are unfit to travel. Apply before your permitted stay expires — overstaying carries fines and possible re-entry bans.

What does the hospital need to provide?+

A letter confirming your appointment, the planned treatment, and the expected duration. International patient offices at the major hospitals issue these routinely, but allow a few days.
